ISO 16190

EN ISO 16190 Footwear and Shoe Components, Test Method for the Quantification of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Footwear Materials

ISO 16190

It is a test method for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in shoe materials. PAHs are often not intentionally added to the manufacturing process and are often found as contaminants in rubber and pigments such as soot. PAHs are considered carcinogenic and genotoxic.

Therefore, many countries have restricted PAH in items such as footwear, for example in the European Union (EU), PAHs are restricted under REACH Annex XVII in clothing, as well as consumer products containing rubber or plastic components in direct contact with the skin.

This new standard repeals and replaces the technical specification. ISO 16190 is now compliant with EN 17132 and AfPS GS PAK regarding the extraction procedure.

The most significant change compared to ISO/TS 16190 is the conversion of the extraction solvent from n-hexane to toluene. This is likely to lead to more comparable results, as extraction is a crucial step, and toluene is the better extraction solvent for PAHs in plastics.
